They're just going and coming and going and coming
0:03
See it's losing that. It's just adding codes, taking away codes, losing the fuel, all kinds of funky stuff
0:18
Today we've got to go look at a 39 CV. I don't even know what's wrong with the boat
0:23
but I know we've got to go look at it and figure out what's going on. But I figured while we're doing that
0:29
I would go ahead and tell you. guys a story of the first time that I blew up an engine while out on the water
0:34
It was an older boat that had a Johnson on it, but I want to show you something real quick
0:39
Take a look of this. Oh, that hurts. The complaint was that the engine wasn't getting wide open throttle, but the cool thing about
0:49
the boat was that it had a little 15 horsepower mercury engine on the back of it, so we had
0:54
a kicker, which was good. So I started looking at the boat and I'm running at the dock and it's idling fine
1:05
There's nothing wrong with the idle. It's actually running pretty smooth. But that's usually where all these stories start is that they say that the engine is running great
1:15
And so what I need to do is take the thing out for a test drive
1:19
So I hop on the boat I take it out and I running around out in the water Now we here at the boat though and I kind of already hooked up the computer to kind of see what we got going on
1:31
But the biggest thing is that I noticed there wasn't a Terminator back here
1:40
If I unplug the computer, we had all kinds of codes
1:50
and issues. They're just going and coming and going and coming
2:10
See it's losing that. It's just adding codes, taking away codes, losing the fuel, all kinds of funky stuff
2:20
But as soon as I plug in a terminator here, which on the end of this cable, it does have a terminator built in
2:30
But I got another one here. Let's plug this in and see what happens. communication communication Communication communication All of our things are steady now
2:56
And all of our codes are going away. So now the only code that we got is a trim position sensor not working
3:05
And if you trim it, it doesn't move. All the rest of them do though
3:16
It's all this trouble. That's for one of these. Back to running the boat
3:29
Going out for test drive, right? Right in the boat, everything's running smooth
3:34
Running around, run around, do a couple loops, wide open throttle, and it's purring like a kitty cat
3:39
Well, it looks like fortunately we lucked out with that boat. You know, there could have been all kinds of
3:44
different problems with the communication on that boat. Whenever you get communication errors on boats
3:49
like those, well, boats like any of these where you've got 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, or even twins
3:56
You've got multiple engines like that. You could have a whole slew of problems. But fortunately
4:02
it was just a Terminator. And we do have videos that show that system
4:09
in detail so I can link those if you want to check those out to see how that system works Let go back to our story about blowing up this engine So the thing is that whenever we went out on the test run everything was running perfect
4:22
You know, idols grade, wide open throttle, driving around, I can't find anything wrong with this boat
4:29
So what I'm thinking is, all right, I'll do a couple loops, come back, talk to the customer
4:37
and we'll figure out what's going on with the boat. So I'm headed back to the marina
4:41
I'm coming in, still running wide open throttle. Boats running perfect. Now remember that this was like 10 years ago
4:47
I was still really green and I didn't know much. There's plenty of other tests that I could have checked out before running the engine
4:54
that probably would have shown that the engine pretty much was dead, but that's just another step that you go through while getting experience
5:01
But I'm running along about 200 yards from the inlet and you just hear this loud boom
5:06
And that was it. The engine locked up and threw a rod right through the block
5:10
So I scrambled around. and got the fuel to the kicker engine hooked up
5:13
and then fortunately, that engine started up, and it was able to get me back without any other issues
5:19
But the takeaway here, though, is that most of the time, an engine isn't going to really give you any signs before it blows up
5:26
Obviously, that was an older engine, and these days you've got oil pressure sensors
5:30
and air pressure sensors, knock sensors, temp sensors. So there are some warnings that you'll get before the engine blows up
5:39
but back then there just wasn't any of it. those
