There you
0:02
What I'm YouTube YouTube
0:14
So here's the problem right And it's a bit infuriating Not gonna lay you to us
0:21
I love a jet boat They're super fun to drive They've got a beautiful layout
0:26
And here we've got a 2021-21 foot Yamaha Got twin Yamaha
0:38
TR-1s, three-cylinder engines. Nice little jet boat
0:49
But we've got some steering issues down here. This rudder here, this rudder here has locked up and what has happened is
0:59
It's actually locked up this thing which broke that bolt that's up in here and it also broke the bolt that goes down here
1:08
So now this thing's all jacked up and it's stretched the steering cables
1:13
So what we've got to do is we've got to free this rudder here
1:18
We've got to free this rudder up. And then we've got to go and investigate
1:24
See, our shifting is also probably going to be jacked up with our shifting cable
1:29
So what we need to do, we gotta come up here. We gotta take a look at what we got going on here
1:39
We got a 704 control box, but again that cable's jacked up
1:44
It might be broken completely. And then in here, for our steering
1:50
if we look back here, we've got a double rack and pinion steering system
1:59
steering system. I've got to get a bunch of this stuff out of here
2:05
Oh snap, man. I've got some ants rolling around here. A bit of an ant problem in the boat. But again, back in here looking at a double
2:18
rack and pinion system. So what I need to do is take the system apart and make sure that
2:23
these cables will work. Got two new cables. Once we get the cables fixed, we'll go back down there to the rudder and see if we've got a broken
2:38
shift cable and if we have the bolts to fix the drive system that's down there in order to do these steering cables
2:48
So you've got to get in here That's one of our cables back there
2:55
Pretty hard to see that cable back there And then the other cable is directly below this
3:02
So getting down there, we're going to have to figure out how to get below this thing
3:12
If we need to change out that steering cable, which is probably broken, so we probably will have to
3:29
Oh, man
3:42
Oh, man. Woo! No, I think I need a full. Take the rudder out
3:59
This pin ain even budging That means this whole thing gonna have to come off of here
4:09
Alright, this is much, much better. Now we've got all this access
4:14
We can see our... It's at our steering or our shift and throttle cable
4:19
That's just a drain there. There's our steering cable down here. Right there
4:26
and oh there's our shift there's our shift cable right here this red one and now we can see those
4:45
bolts down there's going to take the rudder off take those bolts out pull the rudder off then
4:51
once we get the rudder off we can take that rudder up into the shop put it in the vice and knock that
4:55
pin out so we can clean everything out and put it back together. Sticky face in here look where they sealed this
5:00
uh shift cable. Right there. Shift cable. What? What the clear so? I think they used enough
5:20
moldy it's probably real soft stuff in it mm-hmm all right now that we got the rudder out we got to take this up there and stick it in the vice and see if we can get this pin out
5:39
so now what we're really looking at
5:50
is in here all that salt build up that's what's messing us up we are probably
5:59
gonna need to get in some new bushings just because they're plastic and now
6:03
they're warped and broken that's to be expected but you can just see how
6:10
they've swollen up from all the salt you know all that salt in there
6:20
since messed it all up. Now we're to the point where we need to see if we can't get this bolt here as well as get actually that bolt's completely gone
6:46
Actually that bolt's completely gone thicker. I need the bolt and the spacer out of that one
6:55
And I need to get this bolt out to see what we're looking at, to see if we need to do anything with this shift cable
7:04
because it might have broke that shift cable. At the same time, it snapped the head of this bolt off
7:18
Yeah, we should be able to get down. I pulled that no problem. Okay, how about the steering
7:54
Yeah, be careful, careful from here and smash your camera. So we might have got lucky One of the easy ways of getting out a stud you can take a nut put that nut on there tighten it down
8:16
We'll take another nut, put on like that, tying them together
8:26
running down there you go
8:36
we can do the same thing when it comes time to put it back on
8:40
now we want to put this thing back together now with what i would consider an acceptable amount of grease
8:47
so by that i mean we need to get out of all our
8:52
get out all our bushings All right, now we've got those opened up
9:05
Take this thing here. We've got our grease. Okay, do a little painting here
9:26
that in there like that yeah one in there like this yeah
9:36
there's some more grease and roll up in here okay there's one
9:47
the other side here nice and load it up we don't want to miss anything you know what I'm saying nice and paint it up
10:06
this in here too all right that's that's close that's acceptable now
10:17
now I'll stick this girl right there there Now that we've got our bolts and our spacers, we can put the drive assembly back together and then we'll install our rudder assembly and we'll see if our steering's fixed
10:56
You know, I'm actually pretty amazed at how little these bolts and washers are that hold on the shifting mechanism for this drive
11:13
And these things are tiny. There's like four or five, there's only four threads there
11:19
That's it. And that's the only thing. There's two of these bolts that hold the entire
11:26
shift control system for the drive unit on this jet boat. Alright now that we got the rudder in place
11:51
Alright now that we got the rudder in place we can put the nuts back in here to tighten this thing up
11:56
Clean up the ceiling around it and we'll hook everything up We looking good again now Got our ceiling all cleaned up
12:12
I got a bubble there. Alright, now we're looking good again. Got it all sealed up, bolted
12:19
And this biscuit is moving freely. So got our nice and greased up
12:26
Hopefully that'll keep it going for as long as possible. This is just one of the reasons why you do not want to leave
12:31
you've got to be one of these boats in the water for extended period of time because these will
12:37
freeze up lock up and um you almost need to replace the whole thing if you can't get them cleaned up
12:44
soon enough depending on the damage so now we just need to hook our rod back up now we were
12:55
attached to our rudder and then we'll be ready for water Let's take a look and see what's going on with our steering now
13:07
Oh yeah. Butter is smooth back and forth hitting it. What about our shifting
13:15
Shifting nice and smooth now? I love it. This is exactly what we want to see
13:35
We are steering back and forth properly. We are also shifting into forward and reverse properly, smoothly
13:42
There's no snags, no hangs. This is beautiful. That is just absolutely beautiful
13:53
Now we just got to put this back together. Re-seal it, and we can put this thing in the water
14:01
I'm going to be. I'm going to be. I'm going to go to I'm
14:38
Looks like. Looks like we can go ahead and call this a successful repair for the rudder and the steering system
15:04
go ahead and call this a successful repair for the rudder and the steering system
15:10
That's the problem with these jet boats. If you leave them in the water down in salt water
15:14
especially warm salt water, they just corrode and heat up and lock up. And the bolts break off
15:20
The rudder's stiffen up and lock freezing place. So if you've got a jetboat and you're going to
15:26
take it anywhere like this or a surfboat or any other kind of stern driver inboard, you don't
15:31
really want to leave them in the water down here or in any. warm salt water conditions the boats just aren't made to live in the water like
15:39
that the water is just too harmful and too harsh on them to let you do that kind of
15:46
deal so the best thing is to get a trailer trailer it keep the thing out of the water
15:51
make sure you spray everything off with fresh water oil everything up grease
15:57
everything up keep the things moving otherwise you're going to be looking at some
16:01
frozen parts and downtime when you're waiting on parts I'm
